There are other small distinguishing characteristics that separate pairs between brogues, oxfords, and derbys—meaning that they can sometimes be characterised similarly. One of the main defining features is any broguing on the shoe (or the patterns marked of perforated detailing on the outside of the leather, as mentioned before), however, another factor is a pair’s lacing system, and whether it is closer knit to give it a slightly more formal appearance.
